THE WATCH

During the mid-20th century, International Watch Company (IWC) established itself as an engineering first powerhouse, prioritizing mechanical longevity and understated styling. Collectors often label this reference a 'Calatrava" because of its minimalist layout, clean, unbothered lines, and elegant dress proportions. While the exterior represents pure mid-century sophistication, the internal architecture holds true historical prestige. At its core beats the legendary IWC in-house Caliber 853. Developed under the brilliant technical guidance of Albert Pellaton winding system. Unlike conventional automatic rotors of its time, this dual direction mechanism utilizes a specialized cam and pawl design that isolates the movement from heavy shock while offering unmatched winding efficiency. By omitting a date complication, this variant delivers a perfect visual balance, leaving the script signature at 12 o'clock and the "Automatic" stamp at 6 o'clock.

CONDITION REPORT

Case: Good vintage condition. The stainless steel case measures approximately 35mm and presents sharp, correct lines along the bezel, case, and lugs. The case shows honest, age appropriate wear and surface scratches. The inside of the caseback is stamped with the prestigious "Staybrite" mark and original IWC hallmark, retaining beautiful perlage finishing and sharp legible serial number.

Crown: Original and correct non-signed crown that works seamlessly.

Crystal: Fitted with a dome acrylic crystal in clean condition, beautifully emphasizing the curve of the dial and outer minute track.

Dial: Genuinely stunning vintage condition. The dial is pristine for its age with minimal aging. The silvery white dial is crisp and delicate pearl dot minute track and applied steel baton indices remain exceptionally uniform.

Hands & Markers: Original and sharp faceted dauphine hands are well preserved with zero heavy corrosion.

Movement: The in-house Caliber 853 automatic movement is in beautiful, clean mechanical condition. The bridges retain their bright factory finish, and Pellaton winding mechanism operates smoothly. The watch is keeping great time.

Strap: Paired with a premium, aftermarket stitched tan leather strap.

It wears visually laragers than its 35mm proportions thanks to its downward lug profile and clean dial appearance. If your looking to pick up your first vintage watch or looking for something with in-house build quality that can be at home in a dressy or casual environment, you can't go wrong with these vintage IWC automatics.
