THE WATCH

Introduced in the late 1960's and extending into the 1970's, the Seiko Chariot line represented the brands dedication to ultra-slim, elegant dress watches. Positioned as a highly sophisticated time only dress piece, the Chariot was focused entirely on pure horological minimalism and exceptional dial artistry.

At its heart sits the remarkable Daini Caliber 2559a. This is a rare, ultra-slim manual wind caliber that packs a serious mechanical punch, boasting a high-beat frequency of 28,800BPH and an impressive 24 jewel count. It stands as one of Seiko's highest-grade, time-only manual wind movements of the era. It was engineered to provide chronometer adjacent stability in an exceptionally thin profile. The highlight of this specific reference is the magnificent silver mosaic checkerboard linen dial. Rather than a standard vertical graining, Daini Seikosha implemented a cross hatched, alternating checkerboard pattern that shifts beautifully between light and dark woven squares as it rotates in the light. Punctuated by printed black Roman numerals and ultra thin lead hands, the watch is a gorgeous masterclass in mid-century textile inspired dial design.

CONDITION REPORT

Case: Good vintage condition. The stainless steel case retains its slim factory proportions and sharp edges. It shows honest age appropriate wear and surface scratches. It looks to be unpolished or may have had a very light polishing in the past. The caseback remains legible and serial number states this is from November 1970.

Dial: Genuinely stunning and crisp. The highly intricate checkerboard mosaic linen texture remains incredibly well preserved.  These Chariot's were susceptible to dial patina and moisture intrusion, but this one is exceptional.

Hands & Markers: The original printed Roman numerals and lead hands are stark, dark, and beautifully legible against the textured background of the dial

Movement: The premium 24-jewel high beat manual wind Caliber 2559A is mechanically sound, winds smoothly, and ticking strong.  The service history is unknown, but seems to be keeping good time.

Crystal: Fitted with a clean crystal that does not impeded the stunning textured dial.

Strap: Comes on a premium aftermarket brown textured grain leather strap.

THOUGHTS

These Seiko Chariots are so underrated and are gems in the vintage world.  For anyone who appreciates the simpler and more artistic side of Japanese watchmaking, you can find incredible dials, case geometry, and movements in these 1970's ultra slim series. While massive dive watches and chunky chronographs often dominate through this era, the ultra slim dress pieces present such incredible value like this Seiko Chariot. You can find some incredible dials on this vintage Chariots and what makes this piece so special is the incredible architecture of this checkerboard linen dial. The alternating woven mosaic texture catches the light in such a way it looks like silvery silk and provides a level of depth due to the checkerboard pattern that you simply cannot find on standard painted or sunburst dials. When you consider that this wafer thin dress watch also houses a robust high-beat caliber, the value for under $500 is insane. This one will slip under any cuff and offer enough dial depth and pop that it adds incredible interest to an otherwise simple, yet elegant ultra thin dress piece.
