THE WATCH

The early 1970's marked the absolute zenith of the legendary internal rivalry between Seiko's Suwa and Daini factories. In 1971, the Daini Seikosha division introduced the 5200 series calibers to directly challenge Suwa's dominance. The movement powering the watch, the caliber 5245 stands as one of Daini's finest achievements, serving as the very mechanical foundation that Seiko later resurrected for their modern high end 4S line. Earning the highly coveted "Special" designation on the dial, these Chronometer certified, 28,800 BPH high-beat movements were factory regulated to stringent precision tolerances that rivaled Grand Seiko standards of the era. To protect this mechanical masterpiece, Daini housed it in a magnificent front loading 35mm stainless steel monocoque case. This reference also features a highly distinct external regulation screw nestled discretely between the lower lugs, allowing watchmakers to micro adjust the timing without disrupting the water resistant single piece structural design. Free of a day window and only a date, the 5245 variant offers a cleaner, more balance dial symmetry that is far scarcer and heavily sought after by vintage collectors today.

CONDTION REPORT

Case: Excellent, unpolished vintage condition. The monocoque case retains it's sharp, crisp Daini geometry with bold facets and clear case back brushed graining, showing only light, age appropriate hairline wear.

Dial: Very pristine for its age with a gorgeous, bright, vertically textured Silver linen look. There is a singular, tiny spot of natural patina located directly underneath the letter "K" in the applied Seiko logo at 12 o'clock, which is barely visible on the wrist. These dials typically were prone to aging.

Hands & Markers: Original hands and applied indices remain sharp, bright, and completely free of significant oxidation.

Crown: Original and correct signed "KS" crown in great working order.

Crystal: Clean and clear, beautifully showcasing the textured dial underneath

Strap: Paired with a premium, aftermarket black leather strap

THOUGHTS

The 5245-6000 is an incredibly under appreciated giant of vintage horology. While many collectors immediately gravitate towards the Suwa built 56KS series, it is the Daini built "Special" variants that truly showcase Seiko throwing everything they had into out engineering themselves before the quartz crisis fully took hold. What makes this specific piece so special is the mesmerizing silver linen dial and chronometer movement. The subtle, fabric like texture of the linen dial catches the light beautifully, shifting between a cold metallic silver and a soft warm champagne. This one is one of the more pristine examples we have come across. Combined with a robust, razor sharp monocoque case and a highly advanced Chronometer movement, this watch deliver a pure historical significance, high end mechanical pedigree, and unmatched mid century Seiko sophistication.
